  • What is ancient ivory?
Ancient ivory refers to the tusks of ancient elephants from the Ice Age. These elephants, also known as mammoths/mammoths, were all extinct in 2000 BC due to climate change.
  • Does ancient ivory involve environmental issues?
Not involved. All mammoths (or woolly mammoths) became extinct in 2000 BC. The ancient ivory was buried in the ice or permafrost and was excavated, not hunted.
  • Where did ancient ivory come from?
Todaythe remains of mammoths (or mammoths) can still be found in the ice and permafrost of Siberia, Russia. Only 15% of the mammoth ivory discovered so far can be used for carving. AAA-level ancient ivory is even rarer and highly favored by collectors!
  • How to distinguish ancient ivory from modern ivory?
You can tell from the texture. Ancient ivory comes from mammoths, while modern ivory usually comes from African elephants or Asian elephants. The species and genes of the two are different, so the textures of the two will be different. The texture of modern ivory is at an obtuse angle, averaging greater than 90 degrees; the texture of ancient ivory is at an acute angle, less than 90 degrees.
  • Why can ancient ivory be so well preserved after thousands of years?
Ancient ivory buriedin ice and permafrost has been perfectly preserved after years of freezing. Other ivory buried in the soil easily becomes fossilized or semi-fossilized, and is not suitable for carving.
  • Will ivory jewelry turn yellow?
Basically there won’t be much difference. On the contrary, jewelry will become more transparent and beautiful the longer you wear it!
